The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport is here, redefining what a midsize pickup truck can be. With its blend of powerful engine options, advanced suspension, and cutting-edge technology, the Tacoma TRD Sport is designed to deliver exceptional performance both on and off the road. Whether you need robust towing capabilities, a comfortable and feature-rich interior, or the latest in automotive innovation, the 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport has it all. Join me as I uncover all of the key features and enhancements that make this truck a standout choice for adventure seekers and everyday drivers alike.
i-FORCE 2.4L Turbocharged Engine: This enhanced engine performs better than the standard 2.4L Turbo engine, producing 278 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 317 lb.-ft of torque on the standard 8-speed automatic transmission. With the optional 6-speed manual, you’ll get 310 lb.-ft of torque at 2800 rpm and 270 horsepower at 5400 rpm.
i-FORCE MAX 2.4L Hybrid Electric Vehicle: The 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport is available with a powerful i-FORCE Max Hybrid Electric Vehicle engine, delivering impressive performance with up to 326 horsepower at 6000 RPM. This advanced engine generates a remarkable 465 lb.-ft. of torque at just 1700 RPM, ensuring robust power for various driving conditions. The hybrid system features a 288V Ni-MH battery, enhancing fuel efficiency and sustainability. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Tacoma TRD Sport offers a smooth and responsive driving experience, making it a standout choice in its class.
I have been able to drive both powertrains, the 4-cylinder turbo and the Hybrid Max, on the Tacoma TRD Sport. The turbo is very peppy, but the Hybrid Max wants to get up and go. You can actually feel the difference in the torque when starting from a slow position or dead stop.
I am very impressed with both of these offerings. The TRD Sport trim also offers part-time 4WD for improved control and capability on diverse terrains. For 2024, the Hybrid Max Tacoma TRD Sport will only be available in a Double Cab with a 5-foot bed configuration.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport features a coil spring multi-link rear suspension with red TRD sport-tuned twin-tube shocks, enhancing performance and comfort. Built on the TNGA-F platform, this setup improves overall durability and handling. The TRD Sport offers a versatile payload range from 1,380 lbs to 1,705 lbs while boasting a maximum towing capacity of 6,400 lbs., which is impressive for a midsize pickup truck. Toyota has yet to determine the payload and towing capacity for the i-FORCE MAX 2.4L Turbo Hybrid engine. In terms of capabilities, the Tacoma TRD Sport boasts a wide payload range:
Toyota has published the towing capacity for the Tacoma TRD Sport, which is 6,400 lbs. Considering that they only come in a Double Cab for 2024, this is a pretty impressive number for a midsize pickup truck.
The Tacoma is equipped with disc brakes measuring 12.6 inches in the front and 12.2 inches in the rear, ensuring reliable stopping power. Additionally, with up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance, you can confidently tackle rough terrain. The TRD Sport has been upgraded to 13.4-inch front disc brakes with the i-FORCE 2.4L Turbo engine and 13.2-inch rear disc brakes with the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Turbo engine.
The Tacoma TRD Sport is an upgrade over the SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner. For 2024, the Tacoma Sport has 265/65R18 tires paired with 18-inch machined alloy wheels, replacing the 17-inch styled alloy wheels and 245/70R17 series tires on the SR5 Package.
Toyota Clutch Start Cancel: This safety feature, available on select Tacoma models, including the SR, is designed to provide convenience and prevent accidental vehicle movement. It ensures that the engine won’t start if the vehicle is in gear and the clutch pedal is not fully depressed, reducing the risk of unintended motion. It is only available on manual transmission Tacoma models.
Toyota Auto Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) is designed to automatically limit the difference in speed between the two rear wheels. Unlike a fully locking differential, it allows some difference in wheel speed, which is beneficial for everyday driving and on-road conditions. The LSD uses clutches, gears, or other mechanisms to provide more torque to the wheel with more traction while reducing power to the slipping wheel. This helps improve stability and traction in various driving conditions, including wet or icy roads, without the need for driver intervention.
Key Differences
An 18.2-gallon gas tank comes standard on the Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. This truck ranges from 24 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway to 18 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city.

8-inch Touchscreen Toyota Audio Multimedia Radio: Tacoma’s infotainment system boasts an 8-inch touchscreen display, offering a user-friendly interface for accessing a variety of entertainment, communication, and navigation features. With Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and smartphone integration capabilities, drivers can easily stream music, make hands-free calls, and quickly navigate to their destination.
