The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport is here, redefining what a midsize pickup truck can be. With its blend of powerful engine options, advanced suspension, and cutting-edge technology, the Tacoma TRD Sport is designed to deliver exceptional performance both on and off the road. Whether you need robust towing capabilities, a comfortable and feature-rich interior, or the latest in automotive innovation, the 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport has it all. It sits above the SR5 and the TRD PreRunner in the lineup — adding sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and a more premium feature set.

The All-New Tacoma TRD Sport Turbocharged 4-Cylinder

The 2024 TRD Sport comes with two distinct powertrain options, and having driven both, I can tell you they each deliver a very different experience behind the wheel.

i-FORCE 2.4L Turbocharged Engine: This enhanced engine produces 278 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 317 lb.-ft of torque with the standard 8-speed automatic transmission. With the optional 6-speed manual, you get 270 horsepower at 5,400 RPM and 310 lb.-ft of torque at 2,800 RPM.

i-FORCE MAX 2.4L Hybrid Electric Vehicle: The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid delivers up to 326 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and an impressive 465 lb.-ft of torque at just 1,700 RPM — paired with an 8-speed automatic and a 288V Ni-MH battery for enhanced fuel efficiency. For 2024, the Hybrid MAX Tacoma TRD Sport is only available in a Double Cab with a 5-foot bed.

The turbo is very peppy, but the Hybrid MAX wants to get up and go — you can actually feel the difference in torque the moment you pull away from a stop. I'm impressed with both offerings. The TRD Sport also offers part-time 4WD for improved control across diverse terrains.

Payload & Towing Capacity for Tacoma TRD Sport (2024)

The 2024 Tacoma TRD Sport is built on the TNGA-F platform with a coil spring multi-link rear suspension and red TRD sport-tuned twin-tube shocks — improving both durability and handling. Maximum towing capacity comes in at 6,400 lbs., which is impressive for a midsize pickup. Here's the full payload breakdown by configuration:

  • TRD Sport — iFORCE 5-ft. bed Double Cab 8AT 2WD: 1,445 lbs.
  • TRD Sport — iFORCE 5-ft. bed Double Cab 8AT 4WD: 1,430 lbs.
  • TRD Sport — iFORCE 5-ft. bed Double Cab 6MT 4WD: 1,570 lbs.

  • TRD Sport — iFORCE MAX 5-ft. bed Double Cab 8AT 4WD: 1,620 lbs.

Note: Toyota has yet to publish official payload and towing capacity figures for the i-FORCE MAX 2.4L Turbo Hybrid engine specifically.

Braking System and Ground Clearance

The standard Tacoma comes equipped with 12.6-inch front disc brakes and 12.2-inch rear disc brakes. The TRD Sport gets an upgrade — 13.4-inch front discs with the i-FORCE 2.4L Turbo engine, and 13.2-inch rear discs with the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Turbo engine. Combined with up to 10.9 inches of ground clearance, the TRD Sport is built to handle rough terrain with confidence.

Wheels and Tires

The TRD Sport steps up significantly over the SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner. For 2024, it comes with 265/65R18 tires paired with 18-inch machined alloy wheels — replacing the 17-inch styled alloy wheels and 245/70R17 tires found on the SR5 package.

Toyota Clutch Start Cancel

Available on select Tacoma models equipped with a manual transmission, Toyota Clutch Start Cancel is a safety feature that prevents the engine from starting if the vehicle is in gear and the clutch pedal isn't fully depressed — reducing the risk of accidental movement. It's only active on manual transmission models.

Auto Limited-Slip Differential

The Toyota Auto LSD automatically limits the speed difference between the two rear wheels, providing more torque to the wheel with traction while reducing power to the slipping wheel. Unlike a fully locking differential, it allows some variation in wheel speed — making it ideal for mixed driving conditions including wet or icy roads, without requiring driver intervention.

Here's how it compares to an e-locker:

  • Function: The e-locker completely locks the rear differential so both wheels spin at the same speed. The LSD limits the difference but allows some variation to improve traction.
  • Use Case: E-lockers are built for extreme off-road and low-traction conditions. LSDs are better suited for mixed everyday driving — enhanced stability without sacrificing on-road handling.
  • Driver Control: E-lockers require manual activation. LSDs operate automatically based on driving conditions.

From the Floor

After years of working with Tacoma buyers, I started noticing a pattern. Most people think they're choosing a truck based on specs — but in reality, I could usually tell what they were going to buy within the first few minutes. The way they showed up, how they talked about their lifestyle, even the features they gravitated toward — it all gave it away.

If someone mentioned off-roading, camping, or overlanding, they'd usually lean toward the SR5 or TRD Off-Road. But if they kept coming back to the look of the truck — especially that hood scoop — it was almost always the TRD Sport.

I can't tell you how many times someone said they wanted a TRD Pro… until we talked about price. That's when reality kicked in, and I'd show them the TRD Sport. Same aggressive look, better fit for their budget — and a better fit for how they were actually going to use the truck. Most of those buyers weren't planning to do "truck things." They wanted something that looked great, drove well every day, and still had that Tacoma presence. The TRD Sport checked every box.

I even had a customer come back a couple of years later to trade in their TRD Off-Road 4x4 for a TRD Sport 2WD. They originally planned to go off-roading all the time — but it never happened. What they really wanted was something clean, smooth, and practical for daily life. That's a perfect example of what I tell people all the time: don't buy the truck you think you'll use. Buy the one you know you will.

🔑 Cedric's Pro Tip — Buy for Your Life, Not the Spec Sheet

Don't get caught up in horsepower numbers and feature lists — focus on how you'll actually use this truck. The TRD Sport is built for a balance of performance and daily driving, not hardcore off-roading. Think about your commute, your towing needs, and your comfort priorities. The best truck isn't the most powerful one — it's the one that fits your life.
