Today, we delve into the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner XtraCab, covering its details, specs, and the TRD PreRunner Upgrade Package. Initially, I had my reservations about the new design, but as more images emerged, I grew to appreciate its new body style. I wish Toyota had offered a 4WD on this package. My aim, as always, is to provide a quick, informative, and easy-to-digest overview.
i-FORCE 2.4L Turbocharged Engine: This enhanced engine provides better performance than the standard 2.4L Turbo engine, producing 278 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 317 lb.-ft of torque. It features an 8-speed automatic transmission and offers an optional Part-time 4WD for improved control and capability on diverse terrains.
As previously mentioned, I’ve had the opportunity to drive the i-FORCE engines. I can confidently state that the 2.4L Turbo is a major improvement over the previous generation’s 4-cylinder engine. This engine delivers impressive power; when you press the gas pedal, the truck accelerates significantly faster than the previous generation’s 4-cylinder and its V6 counterpart.
The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner features a leaf spring rear suspension with twin-tube shocks underneath. It is also built on the TNGA-F platform, enhancing overall performance and durability.
Regarding capabilities, the TRD PreRunner Xtra Cab has a payload of 1,405 lbs. Toyota has given the Tacoma TRD PreRunner XtraCab a max towing rating of 6,500 lbs, which is very impressive for a midsize pickup truck.
The Tacoma TRD PreRunner XtraCab is equipped with disc brakes measuring 12.6 inches in the front and 12.2 inches in the rear, ensuring reliable stopping power. Additionally, you can confidently tackle rough terrain with up to 11 inches of ground clearance.
The Tacoma TRD PreRunner XtraCab has become a more premium vehicle. It now has 17-inch dark grey alloy wheels with upgraded 265/70R17 all-terrain tires, replacing the 17-inch styled alloy wheels and 245/70R17 series tires on the SR5 Package.
An electronically locking rear differential (e-locker) is a feature that allows the rear differential to be fully locked, ensuring that both rear wheels rotate at the same speed regardless of traction conditions. This is particularly useful in off-road or low-traction situations, such as mud, snow, or rocks, where one wheel might lose traction. By locking the differential, power is distributed evenly to both rear wheels, providing maximum traction and helping the vehicle move forward.
Toyota Auto Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) is designed to automatically limit the difference in speed between the two rear wheels. Unlike a fully locking differential, it allows some difference in wheel speed, which is beneficial for everyday driving and on-road conditions. The LSD uses clutches, gears, or other mechanisms to provide more torque to the wheel with more traction while reducing power to the slipping wheel. This helps improve stability and traction in various driving conditions, including wet or icy roads, without the need for driver intervention.
Key Differences
The Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner comes standard with an 18.2-gallon gas tank. It achieves 24 miles per gallon (mpg) on the highway, 20 mpg in the city, and has a combined fuel efficiency of 22 mpg.
The Tacoma TRD PreRunner now boasts an upgraded 12.3-inch instrument gauge cluster, a significant enhancement over the lower-grade SR5 package’s 7-inch cluster. This impressive digital display provides essential vehicle information such as speed, fuel level, engine RPM, and more. With its clear, easy-to-read graphics, the gauge cluster ensures drivers can quickly and conveniently stay informed about their vehicle’s status, enhancing both safety and convenience on the road.
8-inch Touchscreen Toyota Audio Multimedia Radio: Tacoma’s infotainment system boasts an 8-inch touchscreen display, offering a user-friendly interface for accessing a variety of entertainment, communication, and navigation features. With Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, and smartphone integration capabilities, drivers can easily stream music, make hands-free calls, and easily navigate to their destination. The responsive touchscreen interface ensures smooth operation, while the large display size enhances visibility and usability, even while driving. All Toyota Tacomas come with a backup camera, Wireless Apple CarPlay, and Wireless Android Auto.
Overall, the combination of the 7-inch gauge cluster and the 8-inch touchscreen Toyota Audio Multimedia Radio enhances the driving experience in the Toyota Tacoma, providing drivers with essential information and entertainment features at their fingertips.
